How Old Is the House

Conflicts in Science      by Royal T. McArdell

About the Book:  How Old Is the House challenges many popular beliefs about scientific theories and scientific issues. Arguments both for and against popular theories and issues are presented so that you can make your own decisions as to what to believe.  The Introduction is about a house that is either new or 150 years old- perhaps you can figure it out.  Read the Introduction to the book and add your comments to the web log or send questions to the author.  Items you can view are shown at the left below.

Afterlife

The subject of what happens to our consciousness when we die is fascinating, but we know very little about it.  If one is an atheist, this is probably not a subject for discussion because thoughts, memories, ability to control physical actions, etc. would merely be a part of the physical body and would end at death.  For those who believe in a supreme being, the answer is not that simple.  Although there is not much to go on, there are clues as to what might happen.  The following are some clues that we do have.

One source of several clues is the Bible.  According to the New Testament, Jesus raised several persons from the dead. An interesting case is that of Lazarus, a close friend.  By the time Jesus arrived at the scene, Lazarus’s body had been in the tomb for four days and Jesus was told that the body had an odor. This implies that Lazarus was clearly dead.  Jesus brought him back from the dead and Lazarus resumed his identity.  This first burial place for Lazarus in the town of Bethany has been preserved as a shrine.  The question is: what happened to his consciousness while he was dead.  Apparently it was stored somewhere outside of our concept of reality and was brought back when the body was restored.  This is interesting, because Lazarus’s consciousness could probably have been put into a new or different body instead of the old restored one.

Another clue is that of Jesus himself who was crucified on Good Friday and whose death was observed by many people.  When he rose from the dead on Sunday, it appears that he had the same body that he died with and it was restored, wounds and all, and his consciousness was brought back.  There are also other similar instances where Jesus raised other people from the dead. This is a clue that when we die, our consciousness (I really don’t know what else to call it) is most likely stored somewhere and can be put back into a physical body.

There are other clues.  For example numerous examples of “near death” experiences have been described where people’s consciousness apparently left their bodies and they were able to view their physical body as a separate entity and see things being done to their body while it was clinically dead. After being reunited with their physical bodies, they were able to tell of this experience to others. A Gallup poll taken some years ago indicated that “approximately eight million Americans have had a near-death experience.” This frequency is too large to ignore and it does not appear to be related to religious or non-religious beliefs.  The experience generally ends with “a feeling of being returned to the body.” The author's book site http://howoldisthehouse.com lists references to this subject and other interesting scientific phenomena.

End.
