How Old Is the House

Conflicts in Science      by Royal T. McArdell

About the Book:  How Old Is the House challenges many popular beliefs about scientific theories and scientific issues. Arguments both for and against popular theories and issues are presented so that you can make your own decisions as to what to believe.  The Introduction is about a house that is either new or 150 years old- perhaps you can figure it out.  Read the Introduction to the book and add your comments to the web log or send questions to the author.  Items you can view are shown at the left below.

The Creation of Time

One of the major conflicts between religion and science is the subject of time or age.  Records from the Bible indicate a Universe that is less than 7000 years old while scientific measurements show a Universe that is at least 13 billion years old. One way that this conflict could be resolved is if time or age is considered to be a created concept. By this we mean that one might consider the idea that things could possibly have been created at some point in their individual life cycles - like a 30 year old garden on a 5 billion year old planet with a 20 year old fruit tree complete with fruit and an adult Adam and Eve. Actually this is what creation is all about. This idea might seem ridiculous to you at first, but it appears to be more reasonable when you consider the alternatives.

Creation and evolution both accept the idea that objects and life were formed, but evolution does not generally allow the concept of existing age to be included in the formation process. On the other hand, the Bible has no problem with the creation of age.  Consider one of our many currently existing complex ecosystems that includes plant life, animal life, insect life and the environment  that allows these various forms of life to exist and yet depend on one another for their survival.  These ecosystems would either have to be created with the individual forms of life in various parts of their individual life cycles, or it would have to arise by random events over a long period of time from chemicals, dust and water.  If it was created by God, it would either have to be accomplished in a short period of time, or some finished parts would have to be held in suspension while the other parts were being created.  The Bible indicates that it was all done in a few days so there is no problem of one part waiting for another to be created.  This is also an argument for a creation week rather than a long period of time where the days would be interpreted as ages.

Evolution would have to form this complex system by some other process. The mathematical probability that a complex ecosystem could arise by a succession of random events from chemicals, dust and water is, for all practical purposes, zero, but this is what evolution proposes.

It appears to make as much sense to consider that everything could have been created quickly with existing ages rather than being formed by random events over a long period of time. One of the references on the web site for the book “How Old Is the House” points to an article indicating that the Earth itself along with the Sun, Moon, and the rest of our solar system could be part of a very precise and complex system set in place to provide a habitat for life, and the mathematical probability that there is another such place in the Universe that has all of these same conditions that could support life is virtually zero. The web site for the book  http://howoldisthehouse.com lists the references for these observations and other interesting ideas.
