About the Book: How Old Is the House challenges many popular beliefs about scientific theories and scientific issues. Arguments both for and against popular theories and issues are presented so that you can make your own decisions as to what to believe. The Introduction is about a house that is either new or 150 years old- perhaps you can figure it out. Read the Introduction to the book and add your comments to the web log or send questions to the author. Items you can view are shown at the left below. |

St Paul, Minnesota – July 24, 2007 Organic Soup Didn't Work The originator of the concept of using organic soup to produce life died this year at the age of 77. His name was Stanley Miller and he became famous for a time when he attempted to show that life could be generated in a laboratory flask by passing an electrical charge through various chemicals. Although his experiment did produce amino acids, these acids are not a form of life. The Miller/Urey experiment conducted at the University of Chicago in the year 1953 consisted of an atmosphere of chemicals in a flask through which a continuous electrical discharge was sent producing amino acids. This experiment was followed by additional studies and other experiments, and for a time the scientific community was optimistic that some progress was being made to show that life could be produced by natural processes. After years of additional experiments, no progress was made toward producing even a single living cell, and this experiment is rarely mentioned today. The author of this article indicates that one of the references in his book “How Old Is the House” shows that a simple living cell is so much more complex than amino acids that life could probably not have had a random beginning. The likelihood of primitive life forming in this manner would be impossibly small even if the entire Universe consisted of this organic soup according to one reference. Apparently the experimenters did not consider the enormous complexity of what they were attempting to demonstrate. Additional information on this subject and other scientific controversies can be found at the book web site http://howoldisthehouse.com End. Roy McArdell
