St Paul, Minnesota – July 5, 2008 The Great Flood There are at least three detailed historical accounts of the great flood or deluge. The most popular account is from Biblical records and occurred in about 2344 BC. A second account is from the Epic of Gilgamesh from Babylonia written on stone tablets and dated from about 2000 to 1600 BC. This second account also describes an old man with a boat filled with animals that survived the flood and sent out birds to see if there was dry land. Because of the many similarities, historians are fairly certain that this second description is of the same event. A third account is the Atrahasis Epic that also dates back to Babylonian and Assyrian times and also describes the flood. Although there are differences among these three writings, it is reasonable to assume that they all describe the same event. There are many existing cultures around the world that include a description of a great flood in their folklore including the Yao people from southern China, the Navajo Indians, Cree Indians, Cherokee Indians, Mexican Indians, The Hopi Indians, tribes from the southern Philippines, other cultures from Northeast Asia, Siberia, India, and other places around the globe. The existence of all of these similar descriptions of a great flood among peoples speaking different languages and scattered around the world also lends some credence to the Biblical account of the confusion of tongues and scattering of people over the face of the earth. This scattering event took place at Babylon in about 2215BC or about 130 years after the flood according to Biblical records. Prior to that time all people on Earth spoke the same language according to the Bible and would have learned about the flood from Noah and his family. References to the detailed comparisons of these major accounts of the great flood can be located at the web site http://howoldisthehouse.com The web site also contains references to other interesting historical places and events.
